Hollaback! has joined forces with Asian Americans Advancing Justice| AAJC and Woori Show, an online educational video series for children that celebrates the Korean-American experience, to create effective and thoughtful materials to educate young audiences about the importance of being an ally when witnessing bullying or racism.
Watch our “Be a Super Ally with the 5D’s” Videos:
With the support of experts in language, culture, early childhood education, and child psychology, we have produced a series of 5 short videos in multiple languages for kids ages 3 to 10.
Children will see scenarios of bullying in a public space, such as a playground, and some easy and empowering methods to respond. For example, they will be able to understand that using the distraction method can mean supporting the kid being harassed and distracting them by asking them to play together. Or that ‘Delay’ is to check in on the kid being harassed and ask them if they want to tell an adult about what happened.
Each video is an animated and engaging story with clear and actionable messages about how to react to bullying and racism. The set of videos is an adaptation of Hollaback’s 5D’s methodology. With the use of repeatable, catchy music and lyrics, the videos explain our five strategies for intervention: distract, delegate, document, delay, and direct.
In the wake of racist violence and hate crimes against the AAPI community in the United States, many families might be wondering what they can do to teach their children how to actively and constructively respond if they experience or witness an episode of racism or bullying.
How can we show our kids why racism hurts everyone in our community? How can we help them better understand this issue and take action? How can we explain to them that there is more anti-AAPI hate and bullying happening now, but, unfortunately, this is not a new phenomenon?
Another set of videos will be dedicated to teaching children how to respond in the event that bullying happens to them. They will learn tips such as telling a trusted grownup and practicing self-care. There will be also pieces showing sympathetic conversations on topics like what it means to be Asian American Pacific Islander or what racism is. Stay Tuned for those videos!
Since the launch of our joint anti-Asian harassment trainings in April 2020, Hollaback! and Asian Americans Advancing Justice|AAJC have trained 125,000 people to stop anti-Asian/American and xenophobic harassment. We want to continue to create lasting and impactful resources that benefit the AAPI community and help us keep the conversation going. Please help us share and spread the word with your friends and family. We’ve created this caption/tweet you can post on your accounts to invite your allies:
