Workshop Description:
The impact of harassment on youth is very real.  It can lead to trouble sleeping, loss of appetite, decreased participation in class and thoughts about transferring schools.  Hollaback! believes that stopping harassment amongst young people depends on empowering youth to take action themselves.

This one-hour training, recommended for grades 8 – 12, offers a specially adapted version of our 5D’s of bystander intervention methodology.  The training can offer an intersectional approach (examining harassment in all of its forms) or specifically address bystander intervention to stop gender-based harassment, anti-LGBTQ+ harassment, or race-based harassment, amongst youth.

We begin by offering participants an understanding of what harassment is, how it’s different than bullying, and that it can happen anywhere – at school or on campus, on playgrounds, buses, or in stores and other places of business.  We’ll talk through five strategies for intervention – Distract, Delegate, Document, Delay, and Direct – and teach participants how to prioritize their own safety while intervening.

Then, through our expanded interactive learning experience, we incorporate realistic practice scenarios and group feedback sessions to help participants achieve an applied understanding of the 5D’s concepts and leave feeling more confident to intervene the next time they witness harassment happen amongst their peers.

Read What People Are Saying About This Training:

For so long, it’s been easy for me to avoid the problem when I was never taught on how to confront it. But knowing that there are tools, specifically these 5D Bystander Prevention Tools, to navigate my thoughts has logically, simply, and beautifully been explained at Hollaback’s training. Understanding the source, reflecting the impacts, learning different tools, and applying that knowledge all contribute towards a more well-rounded and self accountable person.
