PUBLIC HARASSMENT: THIS OCCURRED TO ME BACK…

This occurred to me back in high school, but it is still something that I think about almost 10 years later. After the final bell rang, I was walking towards the school gates when I felt someone standing incredibly close behind me. By the time I realized that someone was there, they had decided to take it upon themselves to shove their hand into my hair. I am someone who is incredibly proud of my natural, curly hair and I often wear it out. This person did not know me nor did I know them. Even if I did know them, it does not give someone the right to reach out and touch me without my permission. When I asked why they touched me and my hair, the girl responded that she just “wanted to touch it to see what it felt like.” She did not apologize to me or acknowledge what she did and simply walked away. I am not here to serve as an exhibit and I do not take kindly to people feeling like they have rights to my own body. I would love to say that this is the last time that something like this occurred, but I would be lying.
