PUBLIC HARASSMENT: I WAS WAITING TO CROSS…

I was waiting to cross a busy street in NYC when I heard a man walking in my direction yelling, “Damn, mami.” I didn’t look his way and tried to see if I could cross the street. There were too many cars. I realized that I needed to wait for the light. I held my breath, hoping that he would pass by without incident. A moment later, he was grabbing my ass. My throat closed in fear. I wanted to say something, but I was too afraid that the situation would escalate. There was no one nearby. As he walked away, he turned his head back towards me and we made eye contact. There was no remorse in his eyes. It felt like he was challenging me to speak. I still couldn’t find any words. The light turned and I crossed the street, hyperventilating.
