PUBLIC HARASSMENT: I WAS RIDING THE SUBWAY…

I was riding the subway during peak, and so I had to stand. I’d just gotten onto the train and the middle-aged man standing next to me, I guess upset that I, obviously trans/queer, was standing next to him, started calling me a slur out loud. I hadn’t even looked in his direction (I was reading a book). I moved away from him, but he continued to say degrading things toward me. Not feeling safe, I got off at the next stop, but as I was trying to get off the train, an older man blocked my way and hit me across the chest with his cane. I finally got off the train and out into the station. I just sat down on one of the benches to collect myself. In a crowded train, no one had said anything, or came to my defense, and that hurt almost as much as the harassment itself.
