PUBLIC HARASSMENT: THE DAY AFTER I RECEIVED…

The day after I received my Hollaback! training, I went to a Target for the first time in over a year. I had just passed the two-week mark after my second vaccine, and I was excited to be out in the world again. I had some bags to recycle, and while I was doing that, I moved my cart out of the way about 2 feet from me. A big burly man came along and started pushing my cart. I simply said, “That’s my cart.” He then answered, “Then you shouldn’t have it out here!” It was not the words, but the tone that felt threatening. When he was out of ear shot, two people who had witnessed this small incident said to me, “We saw that! I’m sorry – He was so rude!” Within seconds I realized how much their witnessing and caring instantly made me feel better! They had used the “Delay” tactic – without realizing it, perhaps – and it reinforced how powerful it is just to sense that there is compassion around you at a time like that.
