Street Harassment: Today I was walking out of my college dorm…

Today I was walking out of my college dorm, which is right next to the soccer field, when a soccer ball rolled right in front of me. I knew it belonged to the guys playing on the field, but I was talking on the phone, so I didn’t throw it back to them. As I kept walking, I realized that one of the soccer players had started yelling at me and he was saying “Are you too pretty to pick up a ball?” and I was so shocked. I kept walking and he started saying that I wasn’t with a guy so I must be single and when I didn’t turn around, he yelled “You’re lazy! And that’s why you’re single!”. I couldn’t believe he was saying these things to me in a public place and I turned to look at him and found him across the street facing me. He yelled “Yeah, you!” and I felt so scared that he was going to come over to me. I managed to tell him to leave me alone, but I couldn’t believe that my not picking up a ball could lead to a verbal assault like that. I keep thinking I should’ve just thrown it back, but nothing I did warranted that kind of response. I am scared for when I go back to classes because I didn’t get a good look at his face, so if I run into him again, he can recognize me but I can’t recognize him and that terrifies me.
