HOLLA ON THE GO: I was standing at a stop light…

I was standing at a stop light when a guy walked up to me. It was very cold out that day, so I was wearing jeans, boots, and a heavy jacket- nothing sexually explicit whatsoever. I was just listening to music when I hear this guy say to his friends “watch this- I’m gonna get a free lunch”. He walks up to me and says “Hey miss”. I have an autism spectrum disorder, so I am not particularly fond of confrontation, but I do not know this man and I don’t know what he plans to do, so I stay silent. He puts his hands on me and says “Hey, retarded bitch! I’m talking to you.” The light is still green, and I am not allowed to cross the street, so I stand there and endure it. He yells about following me home, stabbing me to death and having sex with my corpse. All the while, I look straight ahead. They tell you not to engage these people, not to make eye contact, and in a crowd full of people, not a single one was willing to help. He followed me for several blocks until I turned into a Target, where the employees helped me stay calm and buy pepper spray. We need to be better at calling this out and making women feel safe.
