HOLLA ON THE GO: “During the summer time…”

During the summer time, I went to our local community swimming pool with some friends. As the day drifted on my friends all dispersed to attend to other responsibilities while I remained at the pool until closing. During the minutes leading up to closing, I noticed a man standing in the shadows of the trees near the swimming pool, we made eye contact and he waved and made beckoning gestures for me to come and join him. I didn’t think anything of it at the time because being in a public area I assumed he could have been waving at anyone else and my instinctive fears were suppressed from being surrounded by other people. I hadn’t bothered to change back into my regular clothes that day b/c I lived across the street from the pool. After gathering my things I wrapped my towel around me and made my way up the path towards home only to have the same man that was waving earlier stop in front of me and attempt to make small talk. I felt a little uncomfortable, but out of politeness, I made small talk about the weather and such. However, as I attempted to excuse myself to leave he decided to grab me and grope me. If your reading this, I want you to know I was raped in broad daylight. I had such an ordinary day that I didn’t think something like this could happen. For a long time, I didn’t say anything b/c I didn’t know who to tell, or how to even explain what happened. I want you to know if you ever feel unsafe regardless of being in public to tell someone right away , call a friend right away. There are sick people out there looking for a predatory chance to take without consideration so be safe. This platform has allowed me to share my story and I hope it finds its way to other women suffering in silence. Blaming themselves because our culture insists we must dress and behave a certain way to avoid being violated.
