CB’s Story: Uncalled for snapshot

I was out walking my dog around 7:30AM while wearing a knee-length dress. As I approach the street corner, I feel something touch the back of my leg. I whip my head around and see a young man with a backpack pulling a phone away from the hem of my dress. I’m stunned for a moment. He walks ahead and I start to realize what he was doing.

I shout after him and give him a look of anger and confusion. He tries to brush it off. He tells me I’m beautiful and asks if I have a man. I’m still just in awe that he thought this was acceptable. I tell him to leave me alone and he speeds off. Should’ve taken a picture of him.

Elle’s Story: Creep on the subway

This morning I noticed the man next to me on the subway had taken a creepshot of the woman sitting across from him and was sending it to his friends to mock her. I immediately thought of confronting him, telling him what he was doing was not okay; telling her what had happened. What I actually did was take a creepshot of him as I disembarked, shaking with rage. I’m still really upset about what I saw, but most of all, I’m sorry to her for not helping her.

Lisa’s Story: 7 years of harassment

I lived in the NY/NJ area for 7 years – and over that time, I had men expose themselves to me on the subway, call to me on the street and then masturbate, and one time I wasn’t even off of the steps to my building when a guy said “nice tits”. But the worst experience I had was when I was living in Jersey City, NJ and working in Manhattan.

I often took the bus in and out of Port Authority. One night, I was out in NY with friends, and was going home about 11 PM so the terminal was pretty empty and quiet. It was summer, and I was wearing a white sundress that fell just below my knees. As I was standing on the escalator going up to the next floor, I felt my skirt brush my leg. It was odd because the escalator wasn’t crowded, and when I turned to see what caused it, I discovered a man lying on the escalator behind me, peering up my skirt. I immediately started shouting, “Stop it! Get away from me!” and I ran to my bus platform as quickly as possible, because I knew there would be other people waiting there as well. The man followed me. As I neared the platform, I continued shouting, “That man is following me – he just looked up my skirt” By this point I was crying and very upset. The worst part of it, however, was the indifference of the people waiting. Someone actually said, “what do you expect?” and everyone literally avoided me, as if I was crazy.

When I got on the bus, I was sobbing uncontrollably, and no one wanted to sit next to me (which was fine with me). Then one man politely and respectfully asked if he could sit next to me. After he sat down, he apologized for the behavior of everyone else. He asked me if I wanted to talk about it, and I told him what happened. He again apologized for my experience. And then he started asking me random, small talk questions in an effort to divert my attention and make me feel better. He was the only person in a bus load of people that didn’t treat me like a leper. He even offered to walk me to my door, but there was no way I was going to trust him just because he was nice to me. I don’t know if he was trying to take advantage of my being in a vulnerable state, but I like to think that he was just a good guy in a sea of creeps.

Bex’s Story: Bathroom creeper

My husband and I stopped at a fast food restaurant to use the bathroom on our way to a marriage retreat. I entered the bathroom and immediately felt like this was not a good area to be in.

I entered a stall anyway and while using the bathroom a woman reached underneath the door with her phone, made a clicking sound and then took my picture.

Unfortunately, this is not the first time I’ve been taken advantage of in a public place and immediately the feelings of anger and powerlessness overtook me. I didn’t know what to do.. Stay away from this location!

Justine’s Story: Creeper at the station

I was walking to the train station at lunch time when a man crossed the road toward me while I was waiting to cross the other way. He stood right next to me, trying to look down my top and talking on the phone about what he would like to do to ‘this girl’.

When I began to cross he yelled ‘look at that ass go’ and followed me for five minutes, stopping and starting so I wouldn’t think he followed me. I walked up some stairs and he touched my leg and I think he took a photo up my skirt.

Once I reached the train station he kept watching me for a few more minutes but I didn’t move so he eventually left. I was really scared and thought he might grab me or worse.

HOLLA ON THE GO: looking up my skirt

A few years ago I was employed at a clothing store in Seattle, WA. One night I was towards the back of the store straightening the rack of women’s lingerie when I felt a man standing very close to me. I moved to another part of the store when I felt him near me again. I tried to ignore my feelings and stay put. I then looked down and saw him on the ground, his head between my legs looking up my dress. I kicked him hard in the throat and he ran away. I called the police and they didn’t show.
